The 82nd FIP World Congress, taking place in Cape Town, South Africa from September 1-4, 2024, promises to be an educational and uplifting event for pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists globally. The theme is “Innovating for the Future of Healthcare.” Technology has brought immense improvements in the delivery of healthcare. Treatment, management, diagnosis, and prevention of diseases have been transformed over the years through innovation in healthcare. The Congress is divided into three tracks:

Track 1: Equitable Quality Healthcare
– Achieving universal health coverage requires eliminating disparities in access to quality healthcare services.
– Effective collaboration among healthcare providers like pharmacists is key to adopting innovative practices and ensuring affordable, person-centered care.
– Pharmacists play vital roles in medication reconciliation, adherence, improving health literacy, and responding to disease outbreaks

Track 2: Innovative Drug Discovery and Access
– Facilitated by the convergence of science, technology, and digitalization
– Precision medicine enhanced by biotechnology and pharmaceutical research
– Improved logistics and digital supply chains speeding new medication access
– Pharmacists involved in patient-centered trials for non-communicable diseases
– Data-driven approaches enhancing drug development, affordability, and access

Track 3: Revolutionizing Healthcare with AI
– AI and machine learning powering a healthcare revolution
– Diagnostic algorithms and predictive analytics for early detection and personalized guidance
– AI-powered diagnostics expanding to community pharmacies
– Telepharmacy and telemedicine bridging rural-urban gaps
– Effective health data interoperability enabled by AI
– Synergy of healthcare professionals, human innovation, and AI co-creating new healthcare ecosystems

The FIP Congress in Cape Town presents an opportunity for pharmacists to explore their critical roles in innovating and co-creating the future of equitable, accessible, and personalized healthcare empowered by technological advancements. I take the opportunity of this platform to encourage all pharmacists of the GCPCUL to endeavour to be present in Cape Town from 1 – 4 September. You will be glad you did.
